Every workplace needs a first aid kit, but the law does not tell you which one. It asks you to decide what is adequate for your site, and the British Standard BS 8599-1 is the usual way to turn that decision into a kit size.
This shortlist covers BS 8599-1 kits and refills from UK trade catalogues. The notes below take you from HSE's needs assessment to the number and size of kits to buy.

HSE says first aid provision must be adequate and appropriate in the circumstances, and that it cannot tell you what you need. You decide by looking at the nature of the work, the hazards, the size and pattern of your workforce, cover for first-aiders' absence and your accident history. You do not have to record the assessment, though a record helps show how you decided.
As a minimum, HSE says employers must have a suitably stocked first aid kit, an appointed person to take charge of first aid arrangements, and information for all employees about those arrangements. The appointed person needs no formal training but must be available whenever people are at work.
Consider travelling, remote and lone workers, which HSE names specifically.
Check cover across shifts, part-time patterns and holidays.
Restock and check kits regularly, as HSE expects.
BS 8599-1 kit sizes by headcount
BS 8599-1 sets out the contents of small, medium, large, travel and personal issue kits, plus critical injury packs. BSI notes the standard is not mandatory, but it supports the employer's duty under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. All sizes contain the same types of item in different quantities.
The British Red Cross summarises the usual sizing guidance like this:
Low-risk workplaces such as offices: a small kit for up to 25 employees, a medium kit for 25 to 100, and one large kit per 100 employees above that.
Higher-risk workplaces: a small kit for up to 5 people, a medium kit for 5 to 25, and one large kit per 25 employees.
Add travel kits for staff who drive for work and critical injury packs where your assessment finds a risk of serious injury.
Placing and maintaining kits
The British Red Cross advises placing kits where they are easy to reach and clearly signposted, with access for all staff rather than only trained first-aiders. Base the number of kits on your building layout as well as headcount: a large kit on one floor does not serve a team two floors away.
Give one person the job of checking kits on a schedule, replacing used items and noting expiry dates. Refill packs matched to the kit size are usually the simplest way to restock.
