UK first class rail: which routes are worth it for work

First class on LNER, Avanti West Coast and GWR compared for work trips to Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds and Bristol, plus upgrades and Advance vs Anytime.

On the main intercity routes from London, first class buys you a guaranteed table, a separate first class coach, a plug socket and, on most trains, free food and drink brought to your seat. For a two to four hour journey you can treat it as an office.

Three operators run the main business routes. LNER runs London King's Cross to Leeds and Edinburgh. Avanti West Coast runs London Euston to Birmingham and Manchester. GWR runs London Paddington to Bristol. Here is how their first class compares, and how to pay less for it.

1 · Best for Leeds and Edinburgh

LNER First Class

London King's Cross to Leeds, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh

LNER First Class has wider reclining seats, larger tables, power and USB sockets, and complimentary food and drink, including alcohol with the lunch and evening menu seven days a week. LNER has first class lounges at King's Cross, Leeds, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh Waverley. On a four-hour Edinburgh trip, that makes a real difference.

  • Complimentary food and drink 7 days a week
  • Lounges at both ends of the Leeds and Edinburgh routes
  • Onboard upgrades at set prices of £39 or £49

Watch out: Menus can change or run short on the day, and LNER notes items may not always be available.

  • Lounges at Euston, Birmingham and Manchester
  • Guaranteed table
  • Free Wi-Fi

Watch out: On shorter journeys such as Birmingham you may only get drinks, not the full menu. Onboard Wi-Fi is capped at 1.6MB per second.

Route by route

  • London–Edinburgh (LNER): the clearest case for first class. A long journey, full complimentary menu and lounges at both ends.
  • London–Leeds (LNER): worth it if you want to work for the whole journey. Lounges at King's Cross and Leeds.
  • London–Manchester (Avanti): worth it for a working journey, with lounges at Euston and Manchester Piccadilly.
  • London–Birmingham (Avanti): a short journey, so you may only get drinks. Standard Premium, with a guaranteed table, can be enough.
  • London–Bristol (GWR): first class is useful on weekdays. At weekends the £25 upgrade is good value if seats are free.

Weekend and last-minute upgrades

GWR sells weekend upgrades on board through its team, from £10 depending on distance, including £25 for Bristol and Bath. LNER offers onboard upgrades through the Train Manager on super off-peak services at set prices of £39 or £49, and upgrades in your account up to two hours before travel. Avanti lets you upgrade through your account or by asking the Train Manager, and did not publish a set weekend price we could find.

Both LNER and Avanti also point to Seatfrog, an app where you bid for a first class upgrade. LNER says Seatfrog upgrades open three days before departure and carry a £3 platform fee.

Advance vs Anytime for work trips

Advance first class tickets are often much cheaper, but they are only valid on the train you booked. You can change them before your journey starts for a £10 fee plus any fare difference, and they are generally non-refundable.

Anytime tickets cost more but let you take any train on the route at any time of day. An Anytime Return's outward leg is valid for 5 days and the return for one calendar month. You can refund unused tickets for an admin fee of up to £5. If your meeting could overrun, an Anytime or Off-Peak return is the safer choice.

Can the company claim first class?

Yes, if the journey is business travel. HMRC's Employment Income Manual says the tests for travel expenses relate to the nature of the expense, not the amount, and that a deduction for first class rail should not be refused just because standard class would have been cheaper. Whether to allow it is down to your company's own travel policy.

There is no VAT to reclaim on the ticket. HMRC's VAT Notice 744A zero-rates passenger transport on trains. Food bought separately on board, such as a paid dining menu, is catering and is normally standard-rated, so ask for a VAT receipt.

First class on other operators

Most pages only cover LNER, Avanti and GWR. Railsmartr's operator-by-operator review adds these points, checked 27 Oct 2026:

  • TransPennine Express, Hull Trains and East Midlands Railway have 2+1 first class seating with complimentary drinks and snacks or, on some morning trains, hot food.
  • CrossCountry has first class on all trains, but describes the Voyager carriages as cramped.
  • ScotRail sells onboard upgrades for £5 on eXpress services and £15 on Intercity services.
  • Greater Anglia has first class only on Norwich to London, with £10 weekend upgrades on board.
  • On Thameslink and Gatwick Express, Railsmartr sees little reason to pay for first class.

Questions people ask

On journeys of two hours or more, usually yes. You get a guaranteed table, power, a separate first class coach and free food and drink on most LNER and Avanti trains, which makes it easier to work.

Can I upgrade to first class at the weekend?

Yes. GWR sells weekend upgrades on board, £25 between London and Bristol. LNER sells onboard upgrades for £39 or £49 on super off-peak services.

Can I change an Advance first class ticket?

Yes, before your journey starts, for a £10 fee plus any difference in fare. Advance tickets are generally non-refundable.

Which stations have first class lounges?

LNER has lounges at King's Cross, Leeds, York, Newcastle, Edinburgh Waverley and Leuchars. Avanti has them at Euston, Birmingham New Street, Birmingham International, Manchester Piccadilly, Crewe, Liverpool Lime Street and Glasgow Central. GWR has them at Paddington, Cardiff, Penzance and Truro.

What do you get on the First Class train in the UK?

Usually a larger, reclining seat with more legroom, a quieter coach and a table. On long-distance operators such as LNER and Avanti, complimentary food and drink is served on most trains, and major stations have first class lounges.

Which UK train has the best First Class?

Railsmartr's ranking puts LNER first for its 2+1 seats and full complimentary menu, with Avanti West Coast second. For a working journey, both have lounges at the London end.

Can a company claim first class rail as a business expense?

Yes. HMRC guidance says a deduction for first class rail travel should not be refused because the same journey could have been made more cheaply in standard class. Your company policy decides whether it is allowed.
