What the rules require from a screen

The DSE Regulations Schedule says characters must be well defined and of adequate size, the image stable with no flicker, and brightness and contrast easily adjustable. The screen must swivel and tilt easily, it should be possible to use a separate base or adjustable table, and it must be free of reflective glare that causes discomfort.

HSE's posture guidance puts the top of the screen level with the eyes, about an arm's length away, directly in front of the user.

  • Height-adjustable stand, or VESA holes for an arm
  • Tilt and swivel
  • Matt or anti-glare screen finish
  • Flicker-free backlight
  • Easy-to-reach brightness and contrast controls

What to look for for laptop users

HSE recommends laptop users have a separate display screen or a separate keyboard and mouse so the laptop screen can be raised. A USB-C monitor can carry video and charge a laptop over one cable, so check the charging wattage matches what your laptops need.

If you use Microsoft Teams, Microsoft publishes a list of certified peripherals that includes some monitors with built-in cameras and microphones, such as Dell's P2424HEB.

Buying for a team

Standardise on one or two models so cables, docks and arms are interchangeable. Employers must also arrange and pay for an eye test for DSE users who ask, and pay for glasses only if special ones are needed for screen distance.

  • Check the warranty and the supplier's dead pixel policy
  • Check the cables in the box match your laptops
  • Get a VAT invoice in the company name

Questions people ask

What is the best monitors for office work in the UK?

On our shortlist, the Dell UltraSharp 23.8" Full HD 120Hz Monitor (U2424HE) is the best overall pick at £249.99 from Back to the Office. For a tighter budget, the ASUS 23.8" Full HD Monitor (PA247CV) (£243.99) is our best-value choice.

How much should I pay for monitors for office work?

Most of the 1,092 UK listings we screened sit between £135 and £344, with a middle price of £204. Trade suppliers often show prices before VAT, so add 20% if you can't reclaim it.

Can a business reclaim VAT on monitors for office work?

A VAT-registered business can usually reclaim the VAT on equipment bought for business use, as long as it holds a valid VAT invoice from the supplier. Ask the seller for one at checkout.

Where can I buy monitors for office work for a business?

The picks here come from Back to the Office. Most UK trade suppliers offer next-day delivery and VAT invoices; some offer credit accounts for regular orders.

What size monitor is best for office work?

There is no rule. The DSE Regulations require characters of adequate size and an adjustable, glare-free screen. Choose a size that lets staff read comfortably at about an arm's length away.

Do employers have to pay for eye tests for screen users?

Yes, if a DSE user asks. HSE says the employer must arrange and pay for the test, and pay for glasses only if special ones are prescribed for screen distance.

Is a USB-C monitor worth it for laptop users?

Often. One cable can carry video and power, which suits hot desks. Check the monitor's charging wattage is enough for your laptops.

Does a monitor need a height-adjustable stand?

The DSE Regulations require a screen that swivels and tilts, with the option of a separate base or adjustable table. A height-adjustable stand or a monitor arm makes it easier to put the top of the screen at eye level.
