Divide the price of a replacement cartridge by its rated page yield. That gives the cost per page, and it is the only fair way to compare a cheap printer with expensive cartridges against a dearer one with cheap supplies.
Use the yield quoted under the ISO standards, as they are measured the same way across brands. ISO/IEC 19752 covers mono laser toner, ISO/IEC 19798 covers colour laser and ISO/IEC 24711 covers inkjet. The mono test uses a standard page with about 5% coverage and requires several printers and cartridges bought on the open market, so the figures are comparable. Your real yield will be lower if you print dense pages or lots of colour.
Brother publishes two figures for its printers. The maximum monthly duty cycle is the most pages a month the machine is built to survive and is mainly for comparing durability. The recommended monthly print volume is the range for the best performance and printer life.
Brother says printers handle occasional use beyond the recommended range, but consistently printing above it may affect print quality or machine life. Estimate your team's monthly pages, then choose a model whose recommended volume covers it with room to grow.
