The best areas to stay for business

Zuidas, around Amsterdam Zuid station and the World Trade Center, is the city's financial and legal district. It has direct trains to Schiphol and is the most convenient base for meetings there.

The RAI area, just east of Zuidas, is where most conferences and trade shows take place. Centraal Station suits meetings in the old centre and arrivals by train from Brussels or London. Amstel, in the east, is a good-value base with fast links to both.

Getting from the airport

Trains from Schiphol run directly to both Amsterdam Zuid and Amsterdam Centraal. Zuid is only a few minutes away, so Zuidas is very quick to reach from the airport.

Taxis wait outside the arrivals hall, but the train is usually faster and much cheaper for Zuidas and the centre.

The HMRC benchmark for Amsterdam

HMRC publishes overseas scale rates that employers can use for staff travelling abroad. For Amsterdam, the room rate is €150 a night. Payments at or below the published rates are free of Income Tax and National Insurance.

It is a tax-free benchmark, not a booking cap. Employers can choose to reimburse actual costs instead. A room within it rarely draws questions from finance, which is why this guide looks for hotels that price under €150 midweek.

Booking tips

  • Amsterdam's tourist tax is charged as a percentage of the room price, so check whether a quoted rate already includes it.
  • Breakfast is often extra. Some hotels, like Qbic, offer a breakfast to go for early starts.
  • Ask for an invoice in your company's name with the company address, and your VAT number if your finance team needs it.
  • Check the RAI events calendar before booking. Big shows lift prices across Zuidas and the south of the city.
  • Sunday nights are often cheaper than Monday to Thursday, so arriving the evening before can lower the average.

What tax adds to an Amsterdam hotel bill

Amsterdam's tourist tax stays at 12.5% of the room price for 2026. It is the highest city tourist tax in Europe, according to law firm CMS.

Dutch VAT on hotel stays also rose from 9% to 21% on 1 January 2026, which CMS estimates takes the combined tax to around 33.5% of the room price. Hotel industry body KHN reports plans to raise the tourist tax further from 2027, so check the latest rate for future bookings.

When you compare hotels against the €150 HMRC benchmark, compare the total including taxes, not the headline rate.

Entry rules for UK passport holders

UK passport holders can visit the Netherlands and the rest of the Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and FCDO lists attending business meetings as a permitted reason. Days spent in other Schengen countries count towards the same 90.

Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. Passports renewed before 1 October 2018 can fail the 10-year test, so check the issue date when booking.

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is being rolled out. On a first visit you may need to give fingerprints and a photo at the border, which is free, and the record lasts 3 years. Allow extra time at passport control, especially on the way home.

Attending meetings is fine on a visitor basis, but FCDO notes the rules for working in the country are different. Check before sending anyone to deliver paid work on site.

If the traveller comes by Eurostar from St Pancras, border checks happen in London before boarding.

Duty-of-care checklist for PAs

Most hotel lists stop at the room. If you are booking for someone else, these are the checks that protect the traveller and the company.

  • Read the FCDO travel advice for the Netherlands before booking and again before departure. Each page has a sign-up for email alerts when the advice changes.
  • Confirm the traveller has travel insurance that covers business trips. FCDO advises that cover should include the itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.
  • Keep a copy of the itinerary, hotel address and phone number, and the traveller's emergency contact on file in the office.
  • Book a flexible or free-cancellation rate if meeting dates may move, and note the cancellation deadline in local time.
  • Ask the hotel to issue the invoice in the company's name, with the company address, and to send a copy by email at check-out for the expense claim.
  • Cash of €10,000 or more must be declared when entering or leaving, or it can be seized.
