Where to stay in Manchester for work

The centre is compact, but pick the side of town closest to the meeting. It is a 20-minute walk from Piccadilly to Spinningfields.

  • Piccadilly: best for trains from London, Birmingham and the airport, and for offices around Piccadilly Place.
  • St Peter's Square and Oxford Road: the main office district, close to Manchester Central for conferences.
  • Spinningfields and Deansgate: law firms, banks and professional services.
  • Northern Quarter: good value, close to Victoria station and the AO Arena.
  • MediaCityUK and Salford Quays: only if the work is there; it is about 25 minutes by tram from the centre.

Booking tips for PAs and office managers

There is no HMRC nightly cap on hotel rooms in the UK. Our £130 ceiling is a guide budget, so set your own policy and apply it consistently.

Many Manchester city-centre hotels add a City Visitor Charge of £1 per room per night, paid at the hotel (Motel One lists it as an accommodation tax). Budget for it on top of the room rate.

  • Flexible or non-refundable: book non-refundable only when the trip is firm. Pay a little more for free cancellation if the meeting could move.
  • Corporate rates: Premier Inn has a free Business Booker account, and Hilton, IHG and Motel One have company booking options. Ask before booking a group.
  • VAT invoices: UK hotel rooms carry 20% VAT. Ask for a full VAT invoice in the company name, not just a card slip.
  • Breakfast: Hampton by Hilton includes it. At the others it is extra, so compare the room-plus-breakfast price.
  • Event nights: concerts at the AO Arena, Co-op Live and football at Old Trafford or the Etihad can double rates. Check the calendar first.

What a Manchester trip costs beyond the room

Manchester is cheap to get around once you're there. The extras are small, but they're easy to miss on a quote.

  • Airport: trains from Manchester Airport to Piccadilly take about 20 minutes and run every 10 minutes, seven days a week. The airport lists the first train into the city at 04:12 and the last to Piccadilly at 01:34, which covers most late landings.
  • City Visitor Charge: many city-centre hotels add £1 per room per night, paid at the hotel. Ask whether the quote includes it.
  • Event weeks: the Conservative Party Conference returns to Manchester from 3 to 6 October 2027. Concerts at the AO Arena and Co-op Live, and home games at Old Trafford and the Etihad, can also push rates up.
  • Meals: HMRC's tax-free meal benchmarks don't change by city. See our UK meal allowances guide (linked under Sources) for the rates and the qualifying rules.
  • Small extras: up to £5 a night of incidental overnight costs in the UK can be paid tax-free with nothing to report.

PA checklist for a Manchester booking

Manchester bookings go wrong on event nights and at the edges of the city. Run through these before you confirm.

  • Book the side of town that matches the arrival: Piccadilly for trains from London and the airport, Victoria for the Northern Quarter and the AO Arena, St Peter's Square or Oxford Road for the main office district.
  • If the meeting is at MediaCityUK, book at the Quays rather than in the centre. It's a tram ride out, not a walk.
  • Check the fixture lists and arena listings for the night before you pick a non-refundable rate. Note the 2027 Conservative conference dates (3 to 6 October) if the trip is that week.
  • For a flight that lands after midnight, check the train times for that date. The airport gives 01:34 as the last train to Piccadilly; after that, pre-book a taxi.
  • Ask whether the £1 City Visitor Charge is in the quoted rate, and make sure it's itemised on the invoice.
  • Ask for a full VAT invoice in the company name with the purchase order or cost centre, and add the traveller's loyalty number and mobile.
  • Keep a note of who is staying where and on which nights, with the hotel's phone number, for duty of care.
