Best business hotels in Birmingham under £120 a night

Seven reliable Birmingham hotels for work trips under £120 a night, from New Street station to the ICC, Colmore Row and the NEC.

Birmingham is one of the easier UK cities to book on a budget. Midweek rates at mid-range chains are often well under £120, and most of the city centre is walkable from New Street station.

The key decision is where the meeting is. The ICC and Brindleyplace sit on the west side of the centre, the offices of Colmore Row and Snow Hill sit to the north, and the NEC is out by the airport, about 15 minutes away by train. We picked hotels for each, with a desk, Wi-Fi and a sensible walk to transport. Prices below are snapshots from Kayak listings for specific nights, so always check live rates for your dates.

Where to stay in Birmingham for work

Pick the area by where the meeting is, not by the cheapest rate. Birmingham's centre is compact, but crossing it with luggage in the rain still takes 20 minutes.

  • New Street and the Bullring: best all-rounder if you arrive by train from London Euston, Manchester or the North.
  • Broad Street and Brindleyplace: closest to the ICC, Symphony Hall and Utilita Arena, with plenty of places to eat.
  • Colmore Row, Snow Hill and the Jewellery Quarter: the main office district, with law firms, banks and professional services.
  • Moor Street and Digbeth: handy for Chiltern trains to London Marylebone and the creative businesses in Digbeth.
  • NEC and airport: stay here for trade shows at the NEC or an early flight from Birmingham Airport.

Booking tips for PAs and office managers

There is no HMRC nightly cap on hotel rooms in the UK. Our £120 ceiling is a guide budget, so set your own company policy and stick to it.

Rates in Birmingham move a lot with events. A quiet Tuesday can cost half the price of a night during a big NEC or ICC show, so check the event calendars before you book.

  • Flexible or non-refundable: a non-refundable rate is usually cheaper, but only book it if the trip is firm. For meetings that might move, pay a little more for free cancellation.
  • Business rates: Premier Inn has a free Business Booker account for company bookings, and Hilton, IHG, Marriott and Accor all run corporate and small-business programmes. Ask your travel management company too.
  • VAT invoices: UK hotel rooms carry 20% VAT. Ask for a full VAT invoice in the company name, not just a card receipt, so finance can reclaim it.
  • Breakfast: Hampton by Hilton includes breakfast. At most other hotels it is extra, so compare the room-plus-breakfast price, not the room alone.
  • Parking: several city-centre hotels have no car park. If your traveller is driving, check the nearest car park and its price first.

What a Birmingham trip costs beyond the room

Birmingham's extra costs mostly come from the NEC. When a big show is on, rooms near the halls go first and city-centre rates follow.

  • Airport and NEC: Birmingham International station links to the airport terminal by the free Air-Rail Link, which takes about 2 minutes and runs from 03:30 to 00:30 daily. Direct trains to New Street take about 10 minutes.
  • NEC show weeks: coming business shows include Euro Bus Expo (3 to 5 Nov 2026), Advanced Engineering (4 to 5 Nov 2026), Spring Fair (7 to 10 Feb 2027) and Autumn Fair (5 to 8 Sep 2027). If NEC-side hotels are full, a city-centre room plus the 10-minute train often works.
  • Onward to London: Avanti West Coast runs from Birmingham International to London Euston in about 70 minutes, and Chiltern Railways runs from Moor Street to London Marylebone.
  • Meals: HMRC's tax-free meal benchmarks are the same in Birmingham as anywhere in the UK. Our UK meal allowances guide (linked under Sources) explains the rates and the rules.
  • Small extras: up to £5 a night of incidental overnight costs in the UK can be paid tax-free with nothing to report.

PA checklist for a Birmingham booking

The most common Birmingham mistake is booking near the wrong venue. The ICC is in the city centre, while the NEC is out by the airport, a train ride from New Street.

  • Confirm which venue the meeting or show is at: the NEC, next to the airport, or the ICC on Broad Street in the city centre. Book near that one.
  • For a trade show, check the dates on the NEC's own events page and the show's site before you pay, and pick free cancellation if the exhibitor list or stand dates could change.
  • For an early flight from the NEC side, note that the Air-Rail Link to the terminal starts at 03:30.
  • If the traveller is driving into the centre, ask the hotel whether it has parking and what it costs. Several central hotels have none.
  • If the trip includes a team session, ask about meeting rooms and what a day delegate rate includes.
  • Ask for a full VAT invoice in the company name with the purchase order or cost centre, and add the traveller's loyalty number and mobile.
  • Keep a note of who is staying where and on which nights, with the hotel's phone number, for duty of care.

Booking a meeting room at the hotel

Competitor guides list meeting-room counts but rarely say what a package includes. Clayton Hotel Birmingham, one of our picks, is a useful example of what to ask for.

  • Clayton Hotel Birmingham has two main meeting rooms that combine to seat up to 140 theatre-style, plus smaller boardrooms, with Clevertouch video conferencing in the boardrooms for hybrid meetings.
  • Its meeting rates include unlimited refreshments, a conference lunch and AV support, with a dedicated meeting host.
  • It does not publish day delegate prices online, so ask for a written quote and check whether VAT is included.
  • Confirm the maximum numbers with the events team. The hotel's own page gives different figures in different places.

Questions people ask

Where is the best area to stay in Birmingham for business?

For most trips, stay near New Street station or on Broad Street. Choose Brindleyplace for the ICC, the Jewellery Quarter or Colmore Row for city-centre offices, and the NEC area for trade shows.

How much is a business hotel in Birmingham?

In our Kayak checks for early November 2026, mid-range chain hotels in the centre started from about £38 to £60 a night. Prices rise during major NEC and ICC events, so check live rates for your dates.

Which Birmingham hotels include breakfast?

Both Hampton by Hilton hotels in our list, on Broad Street and in the Jewellery Quarter, include breakfast. At the others, breakfast is usually an extra charge or part of a package rate.

Is there an HMRC limit on hotel costs for business trips?

No. HMRC does not set a maximum nightly room rate, as long as the trip is for business. Companies set their own limits in their travel policy.

What is the best hotel for the NEC?

Moxy Birmingham NEC sits across from the exhibition centre, so you can walk to the halls. Book early for big shows, as nearby rooms sell out and prices climb.

How do I get from Birmingham Airport to the city centre?

Take the free Air-Rail Link from the terminal to Birmingham International station, about 2 minutes, then a direct train to New Street, about 10 minutes. The Air-Rail Link runs from 03:30 to 00:30 daily.

Which Birmingham hotels have meeting rooms?

Clayton Hotel Birmingham, near Moor Street station, has a conference floor with two main rooms and several boardrooms. Its meeting rates include refreshments, lunch and AV support; prices are quoted on request.

How much can an employee claim for meals on a Birmingham trip?

Up to £5 for 5 hours away, £10 for 10 hours and £25 for 15 hours if still travelling at 8pm, tax-free under HMRC's benchmark, with receipts kept. Your company can pay less. Our UK meal allowances guide explains the qualifying rules.
