Seven Paris hotels near La Défense, the 8th and the main rail stations that usually come in under €200 a night midweek, with tips on tax and taxis.
Updated 27 October 2026 · Researched from official and published sources
Paris is one of the easier cities to stay in on a work budget, as long as you pick the right side of town. The business district at La Défense, the streets around Saint-Lazare in the 8th, and the big rail stations all have hotels that regularly price below €200 a night on a weekday.
We have picked seven that suit a work trip: short walks to the RER or metro, decent desks or meeting rooms, and rates we could see on a major booking site for early November 2026. Prices move a lot in Paris, especially during trade fairs and fashion weeks, so treat them as a guide and check live rates before you book.
La Défense (Nanterre side), about 8 minutes on foot from the metro and RER
A 175-room hotel a short walk from La Grande Arche and the Les 4 Temps shopping centre, so most of the towers are within easy reach. The 24/7 canteenM serves coffee, hot breakfasts and food at any hour, which helps after a late meeting. It is now part of Marriott, and Bonvoy members get free in-room Wi-Fi when booking direct.
Often well under €150 midweek
Food and coffee available around the clock
Express check-in and check-out
Watch out: Rooms are compact, and Kayak's data shows October averaging around €211 a night, so busy weeks can push it past budget.

The best areas to stay for business
La Défense is the main business district, just west of the city on RER A and metro line 1. Stay there if most of your meetings are in the towers. It is quiet in the evenings, so some people prefer to stay in town and commute.
The 8th arrondissement, around Saint-Lazare, Madeleine and the Champs-Élysées, holds many head offices, law firms and embassies. It is pricier, and good-value rooms below €200 are harder to find.
The main stations are a good compromise. Gare de Lyon is on RER A, so it is direct to La Défense. Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est suit Eurostar arrivals. Montparnasse suits the Left Bank, and Porte de Versailles is the place for Paris Expo.
Getting from the airport
From Charles de Gaulle, RER B runs into Gare du Nord and Châtelet, where you can change for RER A to La Défense. From Orly, metro line 14 now runs into central Paris.
Paris taxis charge fixed fares to and from the city in 2026: €56 between CDG and the Right Bank, €65 between CDG and the Left Bank, €45 between Orly and the Right Bank and €36 between Orly and the Left Bank. A booking supplement can apply. La Défense is outside the city limits, so expect the meter there instead of a flat fare.
The HMRC benchmark for Paris
HMRC publishes overseas scale rates that employers can use for staff travelling abroad. For Paris, the room rate is €199.50 a night. Payments at or below the published rates are free of Income Tax and National Insurance.
It is a tax-free benchmark, not a booking cap. Employers do not have to use it, and many reimburse actual costs instead. In practice, a room booked within the benchmark rarely draws questions from finance, which is why this guide aims for hotels under €200.
Booking tips
City tax is charged per adult per night on top of the room rate. In 2026 it is €5.53 at a three-star hotel and €8.45 at a four-star hotel in Paris.
Check whether breakfast is included. Many rates are room only, and hotel breakfasts in Paris can add a noticeable amount to the bill.
Ask for an invoice in your company's name at check-in, with the company address and VAT number if your finance team needs it. It is easier than reissuing one later.
Avoid big trade fair and fashion weeks if your dates are flexible. Rates at the same hotel can double.
Sunday nights are often the cheapest, so a Sunday arrival can bring the trip average down.
Entry rules for UK passport holders
UK passport holders can visit France and the rest of the Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and FCDO lists attending business meetings as a permitted reason. Days spent in other Schengen countries count towards the same 90.
Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. Passports renewed before 1 October 2018 can fail the 10-year test, so check the issue date when booking.
The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is being rolled out. On a first visit you may need to give fingerprints and a photo at the border, which is free, and the record lasts 3 years. Allow extra time at passport control, especially on the way home.
Attending meetings is fine on a visitor basis, but FCDO notes the rules for working in the country are different. Check before sending anyone to deliver paid work on site.
If the traveller goes by Eurostar from St Pancras, French border checks, including EES, happen in London before boarding, so build that into the check-in time.
Duty-of-care checklist for PAs
Most hotel lists stop at the room. If you are booking for someone else, these are the checks that protect the traveller and the company.
Read the FCDO travel advice for France before booking and again before departure. Each page has a sign-up for email alerts when the advice changes.
Confirm the traveller has travel insurance that covers business trips. FCDO advises that cover should include the itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.
Keep a copy of the itinerary, hotel address and phone number, and the traveller's emergency contact on file in the office.
Book a flexible or free-cancellation rate if meeting dates may move, and note the cancellation deadline in local time.
Ask the hotel to issue the invoice in the company's name, with the company address, and to send a copy by email at check-out for the expense claim.
Demonstrations can disrupt Paris transport at short notice. FCDO advises watching local media, so have a back-up route to meetings, such as RER versus taxi.
Questions people ask
What is a reasonable hotel budget for a business trip to Paris?
Around €150 to €200 a night buys a good three or four-star room near La Défense or a main station midweek. HMRC's room-rate benchmark for Paris is €199.50 a night.
Is it better to stay in La Défense or central Paris for work?
Stay in La Défense if most meetings are in the towers and you want the shortest commute. Stay near Gare de Lyon or Saint-Lazare if you also want restaurants and evenings in town, as both are a short ride away.
How much is the tourist tax in Paris hotels?
In 2026 it is €5.53 per adult per night at three-star hotels and €8.45 at four-star hotels, charged on top of the room rate.
How much is a taxi from Charles de Gaulle to Paris?
There is a fixed fare of €56 to the Right Bank and €65 to the Left Bank in 2026. La Défense is outside Paris, so the meter applies.
What makes a hotel a business hotel?
There is no official definition. In practice it means a hotel near offices or good transport, with reliable free Wi-Fi, a desk in the room, early breakfast and invoices in the company's name. Meeting rooms and a 24-hour reception help too.
Do I need a visa for a business trip to Paris?
No, not for meetings. UK passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any 180 in the Schengen area, and FCDO lists business meetings as a visa-free purpose. Paid work on site has different rules.
Do I need to register for the EES before travelling to Paris?
There is nothing to do in advance. You may be asked for fingerprints and a photo at the border on your first trip. It is free, and on Eurostar it happens at St Pancras.
