Best business hotels in London under £200 a night

Six reliable London hotels for a work trip that can come in under £200 a night, from the City and Canary Wharf to Bankside and Paddington.

London midweek rates swing a lot. The same room can cost £90 on a quiet Tuesday and well over £200 during a big conference week, so the hotel you pick matters less than the night you book.

These picks are compact, well-run chain and brand hotels close to the City, Canary Wharf, the South Bank and Paddington. Each has free Wi-Fi and a desk or work area, and each was listed with rooms under £200 when we checked in October 2026. Recent weeknight averages at some of them run higher, so book early.

Where to stay in London for work

Match the hotel to the meeting, not the landmark. Crossing London at rush hour can take an hour, so a cheaper room in the wrong area is a false saving.

  • The City and Liverpool Street: banks, insurers and law firms. Spitalfields, Aldgate and Tower Hill are often cheaper than the Square Mile itself.
  • Canary Wharf: finance and media offices. Stay on the Isle of Dogs or along the DLR.
  • Southwark and London Bridge: good for South Bank offices and an easy walk to the City.
  • Paddington: best for Heathrow, the Great Western line and the Elizabeth line.
  • King's Cross and Euston: handy for trains to the North and Scotland, and for tech offices around King's Cross.

Booking tips for PAs and office managers

There is no HMRC nightly cap on hotel rooms in the UK. Our £200 ceiling is a guide budget, so set your own policy and apply it the same way every time.

London prices peak on Tuesday to Thursday nights. If the trip can start on a Sunday or Monday, the same room is often much cheaper.

  • Flexible or non-refundable: only book non-refundable when the meeting is firm. For anything that might move, pay a little more for free cancellation.
  • Corporate rates: Premier Inn has a free Business Booker account, and Marriott, Hilton, IHG and Accor run company and small-business programmes. Point A gives 10% off to free A List members.
  • VAT invoices: UK hotel rooms carry 20% VAT. Ask for a full VAT invoice in the company name so finance can reclaim it.
  • Breakfast: check whether it is included. At Point A it is free for members who book direct; elsewhere it is usually extra.
  • Early meetings: check breakfast opening times. Motel One starts at 6am on weekdays and Point A at 6.30am.

What a London trip costs beyond the room

The nightly rate is the big number, but London adds a few costs that other UK cities don't. These are the ones that most often turn up on an expense claim without a budget line.

  • Heathrow: Heathrow Express runs every 15 minutes and takes 15 minutes to Paddington. A walk-up Standard single was £26 on 27 Oct 2026, with advance tickets from £10. The Elizabeth line also serves Heathrow.
  • Gatwick: Gatwick Express runs from London Victoria and says the journey takes from 31 minutes.
  • London City Airport: the DLR runs direct from the airport to Bank, which makes it the handiest airport for a City meeting.
  • Driving: the Congestion Charge is £18 a day paid on the day or in advance, or £21 if paid by midnight on the third day after. It applies 7am to 6pm on weekdays and noon to 6pm at weekends. Cars that don't meet the ULEZ standard pay that charge too.
  • Meals: HMRC's tax-free benchmarks are the same in London as in the rest of the UK, with no London weighting. Our UK meal allowances guide (linked under Sources) sets out the £5, £10 and £25 rates and who qualifies, so we don't repeat them here.
  • Small extras: up to £5 a night of incidental overnight costs in the UK, such as laundry or a personal call, can be paid tax-free with nothing to report.

PA checklist for a London booking

London's size is the trap. Most problems come from a hotel on the wrong side of town, an event week nobody checked, or a car that should have stayed at home.

  • Match the hotel to the arrival point as well as the meeting: Paddington for Heathrow, Victoria for Gatwick, Liverpool Street or Bank for the City and London City Airport.
  • Check the ExCeL calendar for Docklands and Canary Wharf trips. World Travel Market (3 to 5 Nov 2026) and The Business Show (11 to 12 Nov 2026) are two big November shows there; book free cancellation, not non-refundable, until you know the dates are clear.
  • If the traveller is driving, check the hotel's postcode on TfL's Congestion Charge checker, ask whether it has parking and at what price, and tell finance the daily charge is coming.
  • For an early Heathrow flight, allow for the trip to Paddington on top of the 15-minute Heathrow Express ride when you set the check-out and taxi times.
  • Guarantee the room for late arrival and give the hotel the traveller's mobile number, so a delayed train doesn't mean a released room.
  • Ask for a full VAT invoice in the company name, with the purchase order or cost centre on it, and say whether bar and room service go on the company account or the traveller's own card.
  • Ask for a late check-out if the last meeting runs into the afternoon, and keep a note of who is staying where for duty of care.

Questions people ask

What is a reasonable hotel budget for a business trip to London?

Around £150 to £200 a night gets a reliable, central room on most weeknights if you book a few weeks ahead. Expect more during big conferences and on Tuesday to Thursday nights.

Is there an HMRC limit on hotel costs for business travel in the UK?

No. HMRC does not set a nightly cap on UK hotel rooms. The cost must be a genuine business expense, so most companies set their own limit.

Which area of London is best for a business trip?

Stay near the meeting. The City and Liverpool Street suit finance and law, Canary Wharf suits the banks and media firms there, and Paddington suits anyone flying from Heathrow.

What is the quickest way from Heathrow to central London for a meeting?

Heathrow Express takes 15 minutes to Paddington and runs every 15 minutes. A walk-up Standard single was £26 on 27 Oct 2026, or from £10 booked in advance.

Can I get a VAT receipt from a London hotel?

Yes. Ask for a full VAT invoice in the company's name at booking or check-out. UK hotel rooms carry 20% VAT, which VAT-registered businesses can usually reclaim.

What are the best hotels in London for business meetings?

For a small meeting on site, pick a hotel with bookable rooms: citizenM London Bankside has seven meeting rooms. For larger groups, ask the hotel's events team for a day delegate rate, which normally bundles the room, refreshments and lunch.

What is considered a business class hotel?

A business hotel is one built around working travellers: a desk or work area in the room, reliable free Wi-Fi, an early breakfast, and a location close to offices, stations or a conference centre. Many also have meeting rooms and corporate rate programmes.

How much can an employee claim for meals on a London trip?

The same as anywhere in the UK. HMRC's benchmark is up to £5 for 5 hours away, £10 for 10 hours and £25 for 15 hours if still travelling at 8pm, and there is no London uplift. Employers can reimburse actual receipted costs instead; our UK meal allowances guide explains the rules.
