Under the DSE Regulations Schedule, a work chair must be stable, the seat must be adjustable in height, and the seat back must be adjustable in both height and tilt. A footrest must be available on request. A cheap chair with a fixed back or no height adjustment does not meet that bar for a regular screen user.
Lower prices usually mean fewer adjustments, shorter warranties and less information about testing. Ask whether the chair has been tested to BS EN 1335, the European office chair standard, and which edition. FIRA notes that the 2018 edition of the safety part changed the stability tests.
If staff are heavier or the chair will be used across shifts, a standard budget chair may not be suitable. BS 5459-2 covers office seating used by people weighing up to 150kg or for up to 24 hours a day.
Wipe-clean seats suit shared desks and hot-desking. Check the fire label for upholstered chairs: offices are a low-hazard setting under BS 7176.
HSE says employers should carry out a DSE assessment for home workers where the regulations apply, and if equipment is needed, workers cannot be charged for it. FIRA has worked with Trading Standards on whether the domestic furniture fire regulations apply to office chairs sold for home use, so check the chair carries the right labels if it is going to a home.
