Nobo's buying guide ranks quality glass boards as the best for erasability, durability and resistance to ghosting. Good enamel boards have a strong, flat magnetic steel core with an enamel coating, and suit heavy use. Melamine boards are affordable and suit rooms with infrequent use, but Nobo warns they ghost quickly without correct care and are not magnetic.
BS EN 14434:2023 sets ergonomic, technical and safety requirements for wall-mounted and free-standing writing boards in teaching and training rooms. It does not cover the wall or wall attachment, so the fixing is your responsibility.
Large boards are heavy. Check what wall you are fixing to, use fixings suited to plasterboard or masonry, and follow the maker's instructions. Nobo notes its rail-mounted system gives a flush fixing and avoids the corner-hole fixing large boards used to need.
Match the board to the room. Nobo suggests widescreen boards for meeting rooms with wall screens, large boards for open collaborative areas, and mobile boards with lockable castors for multi-use rooms. Nobo also says standard magnets may not hold on glass boards, so order glass magnets with them.
