Mesh backs are popular in offices because they let air through, but a mesh chair still has to meet the same adjustment rules as any other work chair. This guide covers what a business should check beyond the mesh itself.
The mesh chairs above come from UK trade and retail supplier feeds with live prices. Several are operator chairs sold in bulk to offices, so the multi-buy and warranty checks below are worth doing.

The DSE Regulations Schedule requires a stable work chair with a height-adjustable seat and a backrest adjustable in both height and tilt. A mesh back does not replace those adjustments, so check the backrest height can move or that there is adjustable lumbar support.
On this shortlist, some chairs pair a mesh back with an upholstered seat and others are mesh on both. A fabric seat on a mesh chair is still upholstery, and for office use non-domestic seating is assessed under BS 7176, where offices are a low-hazard setting.
Adjustable lumbar support, as mesh alone may not support the lower back for everyone
Seat depth adjustment for taller staff
Height-adjustable arms
A headrest only if staff recline often
Maximum user weight stated by the supplier
Standards and heavy use
BS EN 1335-1 sets the dimensions for office work chairs and BS EN 1335-2 covers safety, strength and durability. FIRA notes the 2018 edition of Part 2 changed the stability tests, so ask for evidence against the current version.
For 24-hour control rooms or heavier users, look for chairs tested to BS 5459-2, which BSI describes as covering office pedestal seating for people up to 150kg or use for up to 24 hours a day.
Buying chairs for a team
If several people share one model, it has to fit your shortest and tallest staff, so check the seat height range and seat depth adjustment rather than buying on looks. Ask the supplier for the maximum user weight and whether the chair is rated for single-shift or 24-hour use.
Most task chairs arrive flat-packed. For more than a handful, ask whether the supplier offers delivery to your floor, assembly and removal of packaging, and check the lead time, as some chairs are made to order.
Get a VAT invoice in the company name, not just an order confirmation
Check the warranty length and whether it covers gas lifts and mechanisms, not only the frame
Ask for evidence of the standard the chair was tested to, and the edition
Keep a spare or two of the most popular model for new starters
Questions people ask
What is the best mesh office chairs in the UK?
On our shortlist, the Regent High Mesh Back Ergonomic Operator Chair Adjustable Arms Tensile is the best overall pick at £330.94 from UK Office Direct Limited. For a tighter budget, the Camden Black Mesh Chair Bespoke Colour Seat Quest Crab (£190.76) is our best-value choice.
How much should I pay for mesh office chairs?
Most of the 838 UK listings we screened sit between £144 and £232, with a middle price of £174. Trade suppliers often show prices before VAT, so add 20% if you can't reclaim it.
Can a business reclaim VAT on mesh office chairs?
A VAT-registered business can usually reclaim the VAT on equipment bought for business use, as long as it holds a valid VAT invoice from the supplier. Ask the seller for one at checkout.
Where can I buy mesh office chairs for a business?
The picks here come from UK Office Direct Limited. Most UK trade suppliers offer next-day delivery and VAT invoices; some offer credit accounts for regular orders.
Are mesh chairs as supportive as padded ones?
It depends on the chair and the person. Look for adjustable lumbar support and backrest height, which the DSE Regulations require in some form, rather than relying on the mesh.
Do mesh office chairs need a fire label?
If the chair has upholstered parts, such as a fabric seat, it should meet the fire standard for non-domestic seating, BS 7176. Offices are classed as low hazard.
Are mesh chairs suitable for 24-hour use?
Only if the maker says so. Ask whether the chair has been tested to BS 5459-2, which covers seating used for up to 24 hours a day.
How do I clean a mesh office chair?
Follow the maker's care instructions for both the mesh and any upholstered seat, and ask the supplier for them before ordering for a team.
