2 · Best for Marina Bay and Suntec

Pan Pacific Singapore

Marina Square, Raffles Boulevard, near Promenade, Esplanade and City Hall MRT

The Pacific Club Lounge on level 38 serves breakfast, afternoon tea and evening drinks for Club guests.

  • Direct link to Suntec convention centre
  • Three MRT stations nearby
  • Club lounge with city views

Watch out: Many rates sit around or just above the S$318 benchmark, so it is the stretch choice in this list.

3 · Best for riverside dinners

Paradox Singapore Merchant Court

  • Near Clarke Quay MRT
  • Plenty of restaurants nearby
  • Event and meeting venues on site

Watch out: It is a walk along the river to Raffles Place rather than on the doorstep, which is less pleasant in the midday heat.

  • Well under the benchmark

The best areas to stay for business

The CBD, around Raffles Place, Tanjong Pagar and Shenton Way, holds most banks, law firms and regional head offices. Marina Bay, with the Marina Bay Financial Centre and the Suntec convention centre, is next door.

Bugis, Clarke Quay, Chinatown and Outram are all a few MRT stops away and usually cheaper. Stay at Changi only for an early flight, as the city is around 30 minutes by road.

Getting from the airport

From Changi Airport MRT station, take the train to Tanah Merah and change for the East West Line into the city, or ride to Expo and change for the Downtown Line. The first trains leave at about 5:31am from Monday to Saturday.

Taxis to the city are metered and usually cost around S$25 to S$45, taking about 30 minutes. An airport surcharge of S$6 to S$8 applies, with extra peak and midnight surcharges. Grab and other ride-hailing apps pick up at all terminals, and the airport's ground transport desks sell fixed-price cars from S$70.

The HMRC benchmark for Singapore

HMRC publishes overseas scale rates that employers can use for staff travelling abroad. For Singapore, the room rate is S$318 a night. Payments at or below the published rates are free of Income Tax and National Insurance.

It is a tax-free benchmark, not a booking cap. Employers can reimburse actual costs instead. A rate within it rarely draws questions from finance. Most rates we saw for this guide sat at or below it, with Pan Pacific and Crowne Plaza Changi the two that sometimes went over.

Booking tips

  • Many Singapore hotel rates are quoted before service charge and GST, often shown as a price with a double plus sign. Check the final total before you compare hotels.
  • Look at Club or Executive room rates. The extra can be worth it if breakfast and evening drinks are included and you would otherwise pay for both.
  • Ask for a tax invoice in your company's name at check-in. Give the company name and address up front so the invoice is right first time.
  • Big conferences at Marina Bay and Suntec push rates up across the city, so check the event calendar for your dates.
  • Foreign-issued bank cards used to tap in on the MRT can incur admin fees, so a stored-value card can work out cheaper on a longer trip.

Entry rules for UK passport holders

British citizens can visit Singapore for business without a visa. The length of stay is normally 30 to 90 days and is set by the immigration officer.

Every visitor must complete the electronic SG Arrival Card in the 3 days before arriving. It asks for travel details and a health declaration, so a PA can fill it in with the traveller once flights are confirmed.

The passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival.

Local rules a business visitor should know

  • Vapes and e-cigarettes are banned. It is illegal to bring them in, even for personal use, and they can be confiscated with a fine.
  • Drug penalties are severe, and you can be screened for drugs in your system on arrival, even if they were taken legally elsewhere.
  • There is zero tolerance for bribery. Keep client gifts and hospitality modest and on the record.
  • Bringing radio communications equipment into Singapore is illegal.
  • Drinking in public outside licensed venues is illegal between 10:30pm and 7am.
  • If police are investigating, they hold your passport and you usually cannot leave until the case is closed.

Duty-of-care checklist for PAs

Most hotel lists stop at the room. If you are booking for someone else, these are the checks that protect the traveller and the company.

  • Read the FCDO travel advice for Singapore before booking and again before departure. Each page has a sign-up for email alerts when the advice changes.
  • Confirm the traveller has travel insurance that covers business trips. FCDO advises that cover should include the itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.
  • Keep a copy of the itinerary, hotel address and phone number, and the traveller's emergency contact on file in the office.
  • Book a flexible or free-cancellation rate if meeting dates may move, and note the cancellation deadline in local time.
  • Ask the hotel to issue the invoice in the company's name, with the company address, and to send a copy by email at check-out for the expense claim.
  • Remind the traveller to submit the SG Arrival Card in the 3 days before arrival and to leave any vape at home.
